ST. CHARLES, Mo. (KMOV.com) -

Bar owners along Main Street are objecting to a proposal that would strictly regulate their businesses and they say maybe even put them out of business.

"They don't want bars, they just want restaurants," says Eric Sohn, general manager of Q.

The bill calls for establishing a point system for the bars in which points are accumulated from a list of offenses including fights and gambling.

There is also a requirement that would mandate the businesses have 60 percent food sales annually to keep their liquor licenses.

City Councilman David Beckering, a sponsor of the bill, says the issue is over public safety and he says 90 percent of the recommendations in the bill came from talks with business owners.
