SOUTH ST. LOUIS COUNTY (KMOV.com) -

The family of a South County man accused of murder says they are being harassed by the victim’s family and also say the shooting was self-defense.

Neville Wright is charged with second-degree murder, accused of killing Thomas Hearst, Jr, 31, who police say was trying to steal his motorcycle.

Wright’s wife Alexandria says on the night of the shooting, it was the second time Hearst and another man tried came to the Wright home to try and steal the motorcycle.

“He said ‘they came back,” said Alexandria Wright.

Hearst and the other man tried to drive away. Wright and his brother-in-law then went after them on foot.

Hearst later turned down a dead end and put the car in reverse driving directly towards Wright and his brother-in-law.

“I believe he was defending himself. I believe he was defending his brother-in-law,” said Wright family attorney Venus Harry.

Harry said Wright and his brother-in-law had no time to move out of the way, and that Wright had to pull his gun. Hearst was shot and later died.

“We are deeply sorry for their loss,” said Alexandria Wright.

Harry says Wright’s family received violent and racist threats from Hearst’s family.

“Right now, I have two children and no husband. I’m afraid and I don’t know what to do,” said Alexandria Wright.

Harry said they are looking forward to their day in court.

Wright’s family had a GoFundme page set up to help pay for legal fees but GoFundMe has since shut it down. Harry says she believes it’s because of the violent threats that family members of Hearst posted to the page.

Wright has a bond hearing scheduled for Monday.
