(Meredith) -- Two police officers saved a 2-year-old's life Sunday after nearly drowning in a kiddie pool in Newark, New Jersey. The entire heroic event was captured on video.
Two rookie police officers, Malikul Aziz and Shaquille Johnson, were responding to a call of a child not breathing after possibly drowning in a family kiddie pool. Scrambling past frantic family members, the officers sprang into action. Johnson said, "She was gasping for air. Actually unresponsive it appeared to be in her father's arms. Her eyes had rolled back."
The officers said they administered first aid for what seemed like an hour.
"We had to turn the baby around and we had to make sure the air passage ways were not obstructed and that's when we had to apply the taps on the back of the baby," Aziz said.
Finally, they heard the child let out a cry.
The child's father, who asked not to be identified, said a father has to always be careful. He said the child was playing in the waist-deep water when he turned away for just a moment. When he looked back, she was face down in the water. He said the officers, "really act like heroes. They're heroes."
Newark police said the officers, both only serving for the past 7 months, will be given commendations for their actions.
