Hacked accounts sent out false tornado warning alerts in Metro East, authorities say

ST. CLAIR COUNTY, Ill. (KMOV.com) -

Authorities say hacked social media accounts were responsible for false alerts in St. Clair County on Friday.

Friday, both the Belleville Fire Department and St. Clair County Emergency notified the public about false tornado warnings.

Initial messages claimed the National Weather Service issued a tornado warning for St. Clair County.

The messaged have since been deleted and police have been notified.
