SOUTH ST. LOUIS (KMOV.com) -

Firefighters spent the overnight hours battling flames at the Macklind Avenue Deli at Macklind Avenue and Nottingham Avenue in south St. Louis.

Firefighters were called to the scene around 1 a.m. and saw heavy smoke and flames coming from the roof of the business.

St. Louis Fire Capt. Garon Mosby said two firefighters were injured while battling the fire, one firefighter was taken to the hospital with non-life threatening injuries after being hit in the head from debris inside the building. He said the other firefighter suffered heat exhaustion at the scene but refused treatment.

About 60 firefighters were on the scene at about 2 a.m.

The fire department said it is still investigating the cause of the fire. Capt. Mosby told News 4 that he spoke to neighbors who reported a heavy volume of fireworks around the time the fire came out.

The former president of the South Hampton Neighborhood Association said the deli played a big role in the community.

“This is a huge loss for the neighborhood,” Adam Wright said. “Macklind Deli is right at the heart of our neighborhood with all our restaurants, our businesses. I can’t tell you how many meetings we’ve had there, how many times we just go up there for sandwiches, hang out. I mean, it’s really at the heart of the neighborhood.”

About 5 hours after the fire first started, fire crews were called back to the deli for a rekindle. Crews were able to quickly extinguish the rekindle.

Gerald Dunn, one of the owners of the deli, said the building's owner plans to have it reopened.

"I think it'll be a new and better deli reopened here, hopefully by the end of summer," said Dunn.

The firefighters are expected to make a full recovery.

A GoFundMe page has been set up for the deli owners. Click here to donate.
