ST. LOUIS (KMOV.com) – The community is rallying around a popular local diner that was destroyed by a fire Saturday night.

Billie’s Fine Foods has been in Soulard since the 1960s, but this weekend that legacy took a big hit. That’s because the well-known diner suffered major damage after a fire late Saturday night.

Firefighters were called to Billie’s Diner, located on South Broadway near Soulard, after a fire broke out in the kitchen.

The restaurant was not open at the time of the fire and there were no injuries. The cause of the fire is currently unknown.

News 4 spoke with one of the owners Monday and she said recent months have been full of ups and downs.

“Business was doing well. I just came back to work about 3 days ago,” said co-owner Lauren Zych. “My business partner was working seven days a week until I got back."

Zych said the owners hope to rebuild and reopen and may put a food truck outside while renovations are underway.

According to a gofundme page created to raise money to repair the diner, the diner’s newest owners recently took over the business. The goal of the fundraiser is $30,000.
