ST. LOUIS, Mo. (KMOV.com) -

Lawrence Strawbridge should be getting ready to go off to college. Tyra Shannon to be helping her son pick out things for his dorm room. But the two were murdered almost two years ago.

The 2016 murders of Strawbridge and  Shannon sent shock waves through his class. Strawbridge and Shannon were stabbed to death inside their North St. Louis home.

But thanks to the Rockwood School District community, Strawbridge's name is living on through his foundation. A foundation named after the 16-year-old to help other students like him.

“What we decided to do is help other students like Lawrence that were bused in from the city to the suburbs at Lafayette High School and make sure we bridge the gap that they have what their cohorts at school had,” said Patricia Dees, one of the co-founders of the organization.

Since it started they have provided backpacks and school supplies, helped pay for field trips and fund scholarships.

This year, the foundation was able to award 10 scholarships and trunks filled with school supplies.

On Sunday, the scholar recipients received their trunks, each personalized with their favorite colors and filled with needed school supplies and things to fill their dorms.

“It means a lot to me, because some people can’t afford all stuff so it’s really good that there’s people out there to help out,” said Trinidy Roberson.

Roberson is heading off to Jefferson College in the fall to study nursing. She and Strawbridge grew up together.

Students like Roberson and David Golder, who considered Strawbridge a brother, say this year has been especially hard without their friend.

“It was definitely really tough especially being around all your friends because you’re missing one  of your best friends. It was really hard walking across the stage for graduation,” said Golder.

Shannon’s son and Strawbridge’s brother, Darquise Gowdy was charged with their murder.

He is still awaiting trail.
