CASEYVILLE, Ill. (KMOV.com) -

The US Supreme Court ruled 5-4 allowing state workers not to pay fees to labor unions.

"This is a historic victory for freedom of speech," said Illinois Governor Bruce Rauner, who has clashed with the unions.

Union leaders while expressing disappointment say they don't expect to see a steep drop in revenue.

"My membership has been telling me that the things our governor has been trying to push on us, they don't like, they're standing up," says Randy Clover, the president of AFSCME Local 424 that represents state workers.

The lawsuit was brought by a state worker, Mark Janus of central Illinois who did not join the union but was still having $45 taken out of paycheck every month.
