EAST ST. LOUIS, Ill. (KMOV.com) – A homicide investigation is underway after a body was found badly burned next to a car in East St. Louis overnight.

Fire crews were called to a home on Converse Avenue for a report of a car fire that spread to the back of a house around 1:30 a.m. Tuesday. When firefighters went to put the fire out, they found a body next to a vehicle.

Fire officials said the body was badly burned but they believe it is a man between the age of 25 and 40. Investigators said they are working to determine whether the victim died in the fire or was killed.

Investigators told News 4 they are looking into who the victim is and what was going on at the house where this all happened.

“Once inside, looked like some renovations, however, some other activity we think may be going on,” said George McClellan, East St. Louis Assistant Fire Chief. “However, until crime scene ascertains nature of those things, we can’t discuss them.”

McClellan suggested the fire may have been intentionally set.

The coroner was seen at the scene working to determine the victim’s cause of death.

No other details have been released.
