CLAYTON (KMOV.com) -

The Clayton Police Department has gotten their paws on a new tool to help reunite lost pets with their owners.

Officers spent Saturday afternoon testing several universal microchip scanners that'll allow them to return pets in a timely manner.

In a Facebook post, police say the scanners will reduce the amount of time that officers spend on these types of calls.

By directly scanning over your pet's chip, it will reveal a unique ID number that can be used to track down pet owners.
