WILDWOOD, Mo (KMOV.com) -

Engineers from Missouri S&T began surveying what's under Lake Chesterfield in an effort to find out why the lake is losing water.

Rows of electrode stakes were driven into the bed of the lake which was emptied last week to allow experts to try and map out the ground and look for clues to where water is escaping.   Scientists hope to have a two-dimensional picture of the entire subsurface of the 22-acre lake.

"It's been disappointing for years," says Lake Chesterfield homeowner Craig Crawford.

The lake has emptied twice since 2004 and homeowners have had to absorb the cost of repair work.

Now they're hoping to get the lake fixed for good.
