Tips to stay safe and cool under a heat advisory

Posted: Updated:
ST. LOUIS, Mo. (KMOV.com) -

A heat advisory will go in effect in the St. Louis area Friday at noon and last until Sunday night.

Drinking water and staying hydrated is key to keeping cool, but how much do you need to be drinking when it's this hot?

According to the doctors of Contra Costa Health Services:

  • Drink 2 - 4 glasses (16-24 ounces) of water every hour
  • Drink sports drinks with salt and electrolytes within the first hour after exercise
  • Avoid alcoholic and sugary drinks, they dehydrate you faster
  • Avoid super cold drinks, they may cause stomach cramps

When we sweat, doctors say we lose more salt than water, which is why sports drinks are important to have when we exercise in the heat to replenish energy and salt levels.

Doctors also recommend wearing lightweight clothing, light-colored clothing, and loose-fitting clothes to stay cold.

They also recommend always wearing sunscreen with a minimum of SPF 15.
