HOUSTON (CNN/KMOV.com) -- The latest social media challenge left a 16-year-old in the hospital with a gunshot wound and may cost another teen time in prison.
The “No Lacking” challenge, which is spread primarily through videos posted to social media, is based on a simple, dangerous, premise.
One person pulls out a gun and asks, “You lackin’?” The other responds by pulling out their own weapon and saying, “No.”
According to officers in Grimes County, Texas, 17-year-old Raul Garcia Junior and his 16-year-old friend were taking part in the No Lacking challenge while driving Sunday night.
The car hit a bump in the road, and Garcia’s gun went off.
His friend was shot in the mouth and was taken to the hospital. He survived, but Garcia now faces potential prison time.
Law enforcement officers are urging parents to check in on their children’s social media habits and remind them of the dangers guns can pose if not handled responsibly.
"Guns aren't toys. They’re there for protection, they’re there for hunting and that’s it. A gun is not a toy, that’s not something you play around with," said Kindale Pittman, Grimes County Sheriff's Office Investigator. “I would highly recommend to parents to monitor their children’s social media to determine what they're looking at. If they were to find something that’s concerning, sit down and talk with them."
