East St. Louis man, 69, killed in two-vehicle crash on Illinois Route 3

Wood River police are investigating a fatal crash that took place on Illinois Route 3 Wednesday afternoon.

Police received a call around 1 p.m. about a crash on Illinois Route 3 near Amoco. The Wood River Fire Department and several ambulances from Alton Memorial Hospital responded to the area. Officers from the Hartford, Roxana, and South Roxana Police Department also showed up to the scene to assist.

An investigation revealed an SUV was traveling southbound on Illinois Route 3. A commercial box truck was attempting to cross both directions of Illinois Route 3 from Amoco Cut-Off traveling west before the accident occurred.

The SUV struck the passenger side of the box truck near the rear wheels. The driver and passenger of the box truck were uninjured.

The driver and one passenger in the SUV were transported by ambulance from the scene to an area hospital. Another passenger in the SUV was flown by helicopter from the scene to a St. Louis area hospital.

The 69-year-old passenger, described as being a man from East St. Louis, later died from his injuries.
