Jefferson County Sheriff's deputies are receiving training for how to respond to an active shooter situation with just the small number of first arriving officers or just a single officer.

"Any one of our road officers might be the very first one responding to an active shooter or active killer situation. So we want to give them the skills and the mindset to go in and address that threat," said Sgt. Matt Moore, a training instructor and member of the department's tactical team.

Officers are taught to not wait on backup to arrive before entering a school or business to look for the shooter. If they hear gunfire, officers are instructed to run toward the shooter, gain his attention so he'll stop harming victims and then immediately confront the gunman to eliminate the threat, without taking time to take cover.

"If you have an active shooter situation and you hear shots fired, our job is to protect the innocents, the victims and we're going to go," said Corporal Greg Hamby.

Officers said its training could be helpful for other situations too.

"This training could be applicable to other scenarios that you go to, just as a road patrol officer, like a business burglary or anything like that," said Corporal Charles Wymore.

Every officer in the department will receive the training.
