ST. LOUIS (BaseballStL) -

The Cardinals announced prior to tonight’s series opener with San Diego that they have purchased the contract of rookie right-hander Daniel Poncedeleon from Memphis and have optioned Luke Voit back to triple-A.

Poncedeleon, 26, was 5-2 with a Pacific Coast League-leading 2.41 ERA in 12 games for Memphis in 2018. The California native is ranked second among PCL pitchers with 71 strikeouts in 59.2 innings pitched.

He appeared in just six games for Memphis last season, missing the remainder of the season after being struck in the head with a line drive.

Luke Voit has appeared in five games in 2018, highlighted by a pinch-hit homer on June 7 against Miami, the first pinch-homer this season for the Cardinals.

Poncedeleon, who has been assigned uniform no. 62, will become the fifth player to make their MLB debut for the Cardinals in 2018, joining Jordan Hicks, Yairo Munoz, Tyler O’Neill and Austin Gomber.
