ST. LOUIS, Mo. (KMOV.com) -

New hope is being ushered in for residents in the West End neighborhood.

The community group, Better Life Family, is in the process of redeveloping 100 vacant homes.

CEO Malik Ahmed is behind the operation.

“The idea is to create an affordable housing market so people can stay in this community,” Ahmed said.

Ahmed says they are relying on grants and donations to complete the entire project.

So far. four homes have been rehabilitated and they expect to have nine more completed by the end of this year.

The organization refurbished an old school on Page Avenue in 2005. Since then, Ahmed says the crime has decreased.

Stats show violent crimes are down in the West End neighborhood by at least 30 percent.

Ahmed says they hope to continue seeing those numbers decline as they rehab more homes.
