ST. LOUIS (KMOV.com) -- The Cardinals lost another arm Tuesday when lefty Ryan Sherriff underwent season-ending Tommy John surgery.
Sherriff originally broke the news on Instagram, where he posted a post-surgery photo announcing the procedure.
The news seemed to catch the Cardinals off guard, as the team said they did not have an official comment on his post, and didn’t confirm the news until several hours later after talking to his doctor.
Sherriff deleted the post after reporters began inquiring about the news to team officials and has not posted anything since.
Sometimes when a pitcher undergoes a surgical procedure for a cleanup, the doctor may discover further damage and decide to fix it on the spot. Given the timetable and the delay in confirmation from the team, it appears the UCL damage was either a surprise or more significant than first thought, and the doctor decided to fix it while the pitcher was already on the table.
Sherriff only pitched 5.2 innings for the Cardinals this season, allowing four runs on eight hits. He was on Triple-A Memphis at the time of the procedure and last pitched on May 17.
