WEBSTER GROVES, Mo. (KMOV.com) -

Brian Ingenthron owns a commercial building on Big Bend Boulevard in Webster Groves.

“Over 20 years and never had an issue before, guess they have to pay for the orange trucks and uniforms one way or the other,” Ingenthron said.

When he got his May Spire gas bill, he was surprised by the increase especially during the time of year when no heat is on.

He realized his base customer charge had changed from $25.50 to $125.

He thought, “this can't be right.”

Ingenthron said he called Spire Monday and they assured him it was accurate. Then he emailed News 4.

After News 4 called, Spire said Ingenthron’s property was miscategorized and that they were “happy to correct Mr. Ingenthron's’s bill today.”

As part of recent rate changes which took effect in April, Spire changed their commercial business categories. There were previously three tiers, but now they’ve simplified to two.

A business either falls below using 10,000 therms a year or above. Ingenthron's property was mistakenly placed in the Large General Service class rather than the small.

His bill has been corrected to a $10 increase a month compared to the $100 increase.

“I feel like I saved $1,200 by making a phone call or an email,” said Ingenthron.

He encourages other business owners to watch their bill and make sure it is accurate. Spire encourages customers to do the same and encourages customers to call if they have any questions.

Spire sent News 4 the following statement:

We were happy to correct Mr. Ingenthron’s bill today. Most of the recent changes as a result of our rate case have been positive for customers, including bill decreases for residential customers and a simplification of rates for commercial customers. All the homes and businesses we serve started to see the new rates on bills in late April and May. We always encourage customers to take a close look at their bill and contact us directly if they have any questions. We’re here to help. If you’d like to read more on the recent changes, just head to www.SpireEnergy.com/mo-rate-case.
