SOUTH ST. LOUIS (KMOV.com) -

A homeowner shot and killed a man who was attempting to enter his home in the Bevo neighborhood Monday night, police said.

The homeowner, 60, told police he shot 43-year-old Louis Zanzottera as he was attempting to enter his home in the 4300 block of Wallace around 9:45 p.m.

According to neighbors, Zanzottera was trying to enter the residence by breaking a front window.

"It's very unfortunate that a life had to be taken," said neighbor Adam Losh. "[But] it seems to be the necessary steps to protecting your family and yourself from possible harm or, god forbid, death."

Zanzottera was pronounced dead at the scene. Police have not announced any charges, and residents in the neighborhood said they were informed authorities believe the shooting was justified.

The shooting appears to fall under Missouri's Castle Doctrine, a law similar to Stand Your Ground which allows people to defend themselves in their homes.

"He got what he deserved," said resident Michael Brown. "Out of all the other stuff going on in the world, breaking into someone's house- it was wrong you know?"
