CLAYTON (KMOV.com) -

St. Louis County police officers will soon be working in two-man teams.

The Special Response Unit will be the first of its kind for St. Louis County police. St. Louis County Executive Steve Stenger and St. Louis County Police Chief Jon Belmar announced its launch on Tuesday.

“These are not normal beat officers, they are not responding to radio calls. They actually make their way into the community and making things happen,” said Stenger.

The unit operates in two-person teams, putting both officers in one patrol car. SRU officers will target street-level crimes, quality of life issues and people who consistently annoy the community.

The unit will be focused on community policing.

Officials said it was made possible by funding from the passage of Prop P.
