ST. CHARLES COUNTY (KMOV.com) -

A portion of Route N will close in St. Charles County for the summer as MoDOT crews work to replace a bridge.

Just south Foristell, Route N between Schaper Drive and Ellerman Oak Drive will close at 8 a.m. It is part of ongoing safety improvements to the two-lane stretch of road. There are around a dozen homes in that small stretch but hundreds of people drive the busy road through St. Charles County every day.

“We felt like it was a dangerous road for a long time,” said Jan Collins who’s lived off Route N for 13 years.

The Collins’ granddaughter was killed in 2012 just down the street from their home.

“She was 16 years old, there’s a cross down there,” said Ross Collins.

In 2015, MoDOT completed improvements to the road including widening it and adding rumble strips.

Monday morning crews will replace the old bridge.

The Collins' also hope the replacement will help combat some of the flooding issues that happen during heavy rains.

"Logs and debris get caught and it floods,” said Ross Collins. “You can barely call it a bridge, it’s a culvert.”

Drivers on the west side of the closure should take Route T to eastbound I-70 to Route Z to detour around the closure. Drivers on the east side of the closure should take Route Z to westbound I-70 to Route T and back to Route N.
