ST. LOUIS (KMOV.com) – A south St. Louis Papa John’s Pizza employee is accused of fatally shot a man after a piece of concrete was thrown through the front door of the business early Saturday morning.

The 30-year-old employee said he feared for his safety and the safety of his co-workers after the large piece of concrete was thrown through the door just after 1:30 a.m. The employee then exited the business and fired his personally-owned handgun at the man, identified as 31-year-old Ollice Upchurch.

After the shooting, Upchurch drove from the area and was later found dead inside a crashed car at Grand and Chippewa.

The investigation is ongoing.

Papa Johns later sent News 4 the following statement:

The incident that occurred at one of our locations in St. Louis is a tragic event.  The safety of our team members and customers is a top priority at Papa John’s. Company policy prohibits employees from utilizing firearms in the performance of their duties. We are fully cooperating with the police department’s investigation.
