ST. LOUIS, Mo. (KMOV.com) -

MetroLink riders will soon see more security.

Friday, St. Louis aldermen gave the green light for deputies from Illinois to have authority in the City of St. Louis.

They approved an ordinance will allow for 15 St. Clair County deputies to patrol MetroLink from Scott Air Force Base to the Delmar Loop.

Riders like Yvette Young say she’s been riding the rail system since its start and has seen an increase in crime.

"It's a lot of older people getting jumped and younger people getting robbed,” Young said.

The city says they requested the extra help to address the increased criminal activity. The St. Louis Police Department says they welcome the deputies.

The department only has eight officers patrolling MetroLink in city limits.

The ordinance will also allow St. Clair County deputies to have arresting power inside the city limits.
