ST. LOUIS, Mo. (KMOV.com) -

A man was found shot to death in the street near popular businesses in the Soulard neighborhood overnight.

Homicide detectives were called out to Russell Boulevard & Menard Street just after midnight on Tuesday. When detectives arrived, they found 51-year-old John Keene dead outside of Bastille Bar and Grill, where he reportedly worked as a bartender for 15 years.

"He was a very good-hearted person, very very good-hearted. Never did wrong to anyone, never did no wrong to no one," said Gregory Pigram, a customer and friend.

According to police, an officer patrolling Soulard was the first to respond and found Peyton Keene with a gunshot wound to his stomach. Police haven't indicated a motive for the shooting but friends say Keene's cellphone is missing. Two cellphones were taken in recent nearby robberies.

As of Thursday, police have not released any information on the investigation. A detective returned to the scene, and while the owner of Bastille says there is a security camera he believes was operational but says he doesn't actually control it.

Police have simply said there is no available video to be released at this time.

"We're all frustrated with the circumstance of the situation, an innocent person who was lovely got killed," said Joanie Thomas, owner of Joanie's Pizzeria and Bar. "Hopefully they'll catch whoever did this horrible, horrible thing to such a lovely person."

News 4 checked crime records and found this is the fifth homicide in the Soulard neighborhood in the past 10 years. And as of the end of April, the overall crime rate in Soulard was down 21%.

Police have not released any description of the suspect.
