This season has not been the most fun for Cardinals outfielder Dexter Fowler, but it got even less so in the fourth inning of Saturday’s game.
In his second plate appearance of the game, Fowler took a pitch from Pirates’ starter Trevor Williams off the front of his knee and immediately slumped to the ground in apparent agony. After a couple minutes with the trainers, he got to his feet and was helped off the field. Fowler exited the game and was replaced by Harrison Bader.
Fowler was 0 for 1 in the game before the injury, lowering his season batting average to .157. Though his performance has not been up to his career standard, the Cardinals would hope not to lose him for any length of time, considering the unfortunate trend of injuries that has already struck the team so far this year.
This story will be updated as further information on Fowler’s condition becomes available.
