Friday, the restaurants along South Grand became a certified Green Dining District, which means 25 percent of the restaurants are Green Dining Alliance certified.

Restaurants accomplish that in a number of ways.

They never use styrofoam, they source more local foods and reduce energy use.

"People are shocked when I tell them most restaurants don't recycle. People want restaurants to recycle. So taking these steps is something that customers want more and more," said Jen DeRose, program manager for Green Dining Alliance.

South Grand is the first Green dining Alliance District in St. Louis. Maplewood and University City are the only others in the area. The Green Dining Alliance has certified more than 110 restaurants in the area.
