JEFFERSON COUNTY, Mo. (KMOV.com) -

The Jefferson County Sheriff’s Office has seen an increase in the amount of reported stolen motor vehicles.

In May, the Sheriff’s Office received 32 stolen vehicle reports, of which, 25 of the vehicles were taken by a person the victim did not know.

With many of these reported incidents, the stolen vehicle was a preventable crime. In more than 70 percent of the reported vehicles stolen, the vehicles were left unlocked and with the keys inside, according to police.

Police want to remind residents to lock their vehicles, store their keys in a safe location and never leave a vehicle running unattended.

If you have any information regarding the theft of a motor vehicle, contact the Jefferson County Sheriff’s Office Detective Bureau at 636-797-5515.
