SOUTHERN ILLINOIS (KMOV.com) -

Residents near Rend Lake, Illinois are inches closer to having regular water services restored after a water main break caused water supplies to be shut off last week.

According to officials, the affected pipe feeds water to nine counties in southern Illinois leaving 175,000 people without water.

Illinois Governor Bruce Rauner declared a disaster area for the counties affected.

"I hate to think that crises cause change but the reality is we need to be investing in our infrastructure far more," said Rauner.

Results from the first water quality test samples came back Sunday but boil orders remain in effect until local water district complete their testing.

"Only if our tests comes back and says the water is potable and drinkable then each of the communities has to then have their system tested," said Larry Sanders of Rend Lake Conservancy District.
