MAPLEWOOD, Mo. (KMOV.com) -

Maplewood police are now calling a missing woman case suspicious.

Barbara Johnson, 62, was last seen at 3 p.m. on May 16 in the 7200 block of Manchester Road. Gary Martin, Johnson’s son says the last week has been a reality he can’t change.

“I woke up from a nightmare about my mom,” he said.

They noticed her bank accounts were drained and her rent hadn’t been paid. Maplewood police said she was last spotted on street cameras near the intersection of Manchester Road and Laclede Station Road last Tuesday.

Her family said they reported her missing on Thursday.

“I know my mom’s habit, even if she just needed to get away she wouldn’t be gone for more than 24- 48 hours because she’s got a pet, she’s got bills, she’s got responsibilities,” said Martin.

The non-profit group 'St. Louis Search and Rescue' told News 4 they will begin a recovery mission for Johnson’s body on Wednesday. They will be meeting with police Wednesday morning to access the area where they will begin searching for her.

"Mother's out there and we are going to find her," Martin said. "We're going to get answers."

Investigators said they found Johnson's purse not far from where she was last seen.

"She would have gone back and gotten her purse, she's not going to leave that anywhere, that's her life blanket," said Martin.

Johnson is 4’10”, and weighs 85 lbs. She has brown hair and hazel eyes. She was last seen wearing a black hat, black blouse and black pants.

Anyone with information on Johnson’s whereabouts is encouraged to call the Maplewood PD at 314-645-3000.
