This Sunday, the St. Louis Cardinals are celebrating and remembering the Negro Leagues and will have a very special guest throw-out the first pitch.
Samuel Taylor, a catcher, played for various teams, but spent most of his time with the Kansas City Monarchs. The Cardinals even scouted him in 1951.
“I was the first negro to be offered a contract by the Cardinals,” said Taylor.
Taylor was able to recall memories during his time as a catcher, good and bad.
“We were accepted in a lot of places and sometimes they didn’t want us there,” said Taylor. “We had trouble in Buffalo, New York of all places.”
But, being able to play the game he loved outweighed the hard times.
Taylor will soon add another snapshot of his memory wall when he will throw out the first pitch Sunday at Busch Stadium.
“I’ll be ready to throw it Sunday,” Taylor said excitedly. “Not throw it, I’m going to have to roll it.”
