Teamster union officials plead guilty to embezzlement

Two ex-Teamster union officials entered pleas of guilty to embezzlement charges today.

Belleville, Ill. residents Scott Alexander and his wife Nancy Alexander pleaded guilty to embezzling and converting Union funds by using the Union’s credit card to make personal purchases and manipulating their payroll withholdings to increase their net pay at the Local’s expense. They also acknowledged receiving more vacation pay than earned, receiving salary on vacation and receiving additional auto allowance payments, according to the U.S. Department of Justice.

These activities took place between January 1, 2012 and June 30, 2016. At this time, Scott Alexander was President and Business Agent of the Local 50 of the International Brotherhood of Teamsters. Nancy Alexander was the Local’s office administrator.

The offenses carry a possible sentence of up to 25 years in jail, a fine of up to $500,000 and mandatory restitution. Sentencing is scheduled for August 24, 2018.

The prosecution is the result of an investigation by the U.S. Department of Labor, Office of Labor Management Standards. The case is being prosecuted by Assistant United States Attorney Norman R. Smith.
