JEFFERSON COUNTY, Mo. (KMOV.com) -

Jefferson County Sheriff’s Office is warning residents if you receive a letter and a check from someone claiming to be associated with Publishers Clearing House, do not cash the check!

When you contact the number provided the scam artist will attempt to have you cash the check and mail them a money order for so called “Processing Fees” to obtain your fake winnings.

The enclosed check may initially be honored at your bank and you may be granted the money. However, once it is determined to be fraudulent you will be responsible for repaying the bank.

The actual Publishers Clearing House will never ask you for payment to process your awarded prize.

If you receive one of these letters you can contact the Jefferson County Dispatching Center at 636-797-9999.
