What do you do if you’re home alone and need medical help but can’t get to your cell phone? A Metro East man googled help on his computer and thankfully someone was on the other end to answer his call for assistance.

Doug Brooks of Swansea found himself in a situation he never wants to be in again.

“I got no way to call my buddy, my family, got no way to call nobody,” said Brooks.

Brooks suffers from congestive heart failure and didn’t have the strength to get up out a chair and his cell phone was back in his bedroom.

He says thankfully he was close to his computer. He looked up emergency services online and came across the Facebook page for the St. Clair County Management Agency and messaged for help.

“Right away I could tell this man needed assistance,” said Herb Simmons, St. Clair County Emergency Management Agency.

Director Herb Simmons was checking the page early Tuesday morning, seeing if there were any issues following Monday night’s storms.

He messaged Brooks that he was sending a police officer and an ambulance.

“We had a conversation, said he was getting help for me but then the help drove right by my house,” said Brooks.

Emergency responders had a tough time finding his home because it’s listed on the wrong street. Brooks messaged Simmons again and described his house so his help could find him.

“I am so very, very thankful,” said Brooks.

Brooks is glad responders were able to find him before something bad occurred.

EMS personnel painted the address on his mailbox so it would stand out and then they made him breakfast.
