FAIRVIEW HEIGHTS, Ill. (KMOV.com) – A man was arrested after allegedly assaulting security officers at the Fairview Heights MetroLink Station.

Around 1 a.m. on May 11, MetroLink security officers reported a man had exited the train and went to an area beside the tracks that was prohibited to the public. When officers asked him to leave the area, the St. Louis man reportedly refused to do so and began shouting expletives at them.

Security officers then went to the area and attempted to take the 35-year-old into custody, at which time he allegedly swung his fists and kicked at the officers, striking them in the process. One officer was hit in the face and suffered swelling around one of his eyes.

As officers with the Fairview Heights Police Department arrived at the scene, the security officers were able to take Joshua R. Efken into custody. The suspect was then found to be wearing a GPS ankle monitor, which police learned was for a prior conviction of rape in Missouri.

Efken has been charged with two felony counts of aggravated battery and his bail was set at $100,000.
