ST. LOUIS, Mo. (KMOV.com) -

Local activists are stepping in to help women in jail this Mother’s day.

Members of Expect Us, a grassroots organization, rallied together outside the St. Louis Justice Center Saturday for their Bail Out Black Mothers event in Downtown St. Louis.

Activists raised about $2,000 to bail out three African American women being held for minor offenses such as traffic violations.

“I know what it would feel like if I was without my momma because of a traffic ticket because they can’t afford it”, said activist Ebony Williams.

The organization is working to connect the women with community resources to help them with their cases in the future.

#FreeBlackMoms for Mother’s Day is a nationwide effort that dozens of cities participate in across the country.
