EAST ST. LOUIS (KMOV.com) - -

Track athletes from East St. Louis High School walked out of class Friday in an effort to reverse the district’s decision to cancel the rest of the season.

The district decided to cancel the rest of the season after a fight broke out a meet on Tuesday. Some students walked from the high school to district headquarters to plead their case, some later returned to class.

Several students continued to hang around the parking lot of the district’s main office hoping to pressure officials into overturning their decision.

Senior Edgar Jones, Jr. told News 4 he sees track as a way to get into college.

“That’s my ticket. It’s like you’re taking my ticket away from me, something that’s in my hands, you’re limiting my options,” said Jones, Jr.

The family members of some track athletes say it is unfair to punish the entire team, including those who weren’t actively involved in the fight.

“We’ve already punished the kids that were involved, then why go behind and punish the whole track team?” said Raymond Mix, the grandfather of two East St. Louis track athletes.

The East St. Louis school district says it is not ideal to have a number of people face consequences for the actions of a few, saying safety is the top priority.

"I'm hoping that we can talk to the superintendent and they can reinstate our season..and at least give us a chance to compete at state," said East St. Louis track athlete Damien Smith.

A decision is expected Monday on whether the track season will continue.
