ST. LOUIS (KMOV.com) -- Carlos Martinez has been moved to the 10-day disabled list with a lat strain, according to the team.
The move is retroactive to Wednesday.
Martinez threw five innings against the Minnesota Twins on May 8, allowing four hits and two earned runs. He was pulled after 85 pitches.
Throughout the start, his velocity- typically in the mid 90s and occasionally reaching 100- was markedly down, with many fastballs failing to reach 90 miles per hour.
The Cardinals have not announced the severity of the injury.
The team recalled righty Mike Mayers to take Martinez’s place.
Martinez had been off to an impressive start to the season, leading the National League in ERA (1.62) and posting a WAR of 1.6 (7th in the NL).
No announcement has been made on who will take his place for the upcoming start, which was scheduled for Monday.
