SOUTH ST. LOUIS (KMOV.com) – A 22-year-old suspect is in custody following a suspected burglary in south St. Louis early Thursday.

Officers received a call for a “burglar in the building” in the Benton Park West Neighborhood and found the victim, a 33-year-old man, who said he heard his house alarm go off while he was inside.

The victim says he noticed the lights on inside his detached garage and damage to the garage door.

The man then went to get a gun from inside his home and responded to the garage where he encountered the suspect.

Police say the victim tried to hold the suspect until authorities arrived, however, the suspect moved towards the victim in a threatening manner.

The victim fire one shot in the air to attempt to stop the suspect. Authorities say the suspect continued to move towards the victim.

The suspect then fired a shot at the suspected burglar, hitting him in his leg,

Police say the victim was taken into custody and transported to a local hospital where is he expected to be okay.

A 42- year-old woman was inside the home at the time of the incident but was unharmed.
