Metro East barber 'Flat Top Tony' charged in robbery, chase

BETHALTO, Ill. ( – The owner of an Alton barber shop has been charged in connection to a high-speed chase following a robbery that took place in the Metro East.

Thirty-eight-year-old Anthony Sims allegedly forcefully took money from the register of the Casey’s General Store on State Route 140 on Saturday, May 5 just before 11 p.m. After leaving the store, deputies found Sims and a pursuit began. During the pursuit, speeds reached over 100 mph, police said in a media release. The pursuit ended after three tires were deflated.

According to court documents, a 4-month-old girl was a passenger in Sims’ vehicle during the chase. The baby is now in the custody of his mother, according to a representative of the Madison County Sheriff's Office.

Police have not confirmed the relation of the baby to Sims. 

When the pursuit ended, Sims was taken to the Madison County Jail. 

Sims is the owner of a barber shop located at 400 State St. in Alton, where he formerly cut hair under the name "Flat Top Tony".

He is being held on a $150,000 bond on charges of robbery, aggravated fleeing or attempting to elude a police officer, criminal damage to property, and child endangerment.
