St. Louis Cardinals trainer Chris Conroy, left, and manager Mike Matheny (22) take catcher Yadier Molina back to the dugout after Molina was injured on a pitch during the ninth inning of a baseball game against the Chicago Cubs, Saturday, May 5, 2018, in
ST. LOUIS (BaseballStL) -
Yadier Molina underwent emergency surgery Saturday evening after being hit in the groin area by a foul tip and is expected to miss at least a month of play.
The club confirmed Sunday morning what most Cardinals fans feared after Molina got hit during the ninth inning of Saturday’s walk-off win against the Cubs. Kris Bryant grazed a 102-mph Jordan Hick’s fastball, redirecting it into Molina’s groin area.
According to a press release from the team, Molina underwent emergency surgery because of a pelvic injury with traumatic hematoma and is expected to miss at least four weeks.
Joining Molina on the disabled list is right-handed reliever Dominic Leone who is suffering from upper arm nerve irritation in his pitching arm.
The Cardinals have called-up Carson Kelly and right-hander Mike Mayers from Triple-A Memphis to fill the void left by Molina and Leone.
Kelly, who has appeared in 44 games over the past two seasons, will wear number 19, while Mayers, who has bounced between Memphis and St. Louis, takes back his number 59 uniform.
