SPARTA, Ill. (KMOV.com) -

Screams of excitement could have quickly turned into shouts of panic. Police said a man was shot during an altercation after a demolition derby event in Sparta, Illinois Friday night.

Demolition derby was being held at Sparta's annual Carnival in the Park. An altercation broke out about 40 minutes after demolition derby concluded, police said. One man involved was a driver in the demolition derby, police said.  The other man involved was not a driver in the derby.

During the altercation, one man shot the other in the abdomen, police say. He was airlifted to a  hospital in St. Louis, was treated and released.

Police said the shooter accidentally shot himself in the hand. Both men are not from Sparta, police said.

"I thought it was pretty silly for anyone to have guns in a place where kids are," said carnival attendee Johna Wisnasky.

Event organizers are bummed two people from out of town are causing bad attention.

"Last night's incident was isolated. That is not a common occurrence in Sparta. What is common in Sparta are events like this," said Sparta Park Committee's Sheryl Blum.

The person shot, whose name News 4 is not reporting, messaged and said he was hit in the face with a flashlight and shot twice in the upper body.

"When one bad event happens in Sparta, amongst 5,000 good things, people will focus on the one bad. We want people to focus on the 5,000 good. We work very hard to make Sparta a good place," added Blum.

With one day left, in the carnival's five-day run, the crowd continues to show-up.
"In all reality, it's everyday life now," said Winsnasky.

The alleged shooter is in custody and is charged with aggravated battery with a firearm. Police said a woman who was involved has been charged with obstruction of a peace officer and unlawful possession of a firearm without a Firearm Owner ID card.
