JEFFERSON COUNTY, Mo. (KMOV.com) -

In Jefferson County, a battle is brewing over turning a wooded area into a sand mine. Local residents are trying to stop it in its track.

Resident Roland Evans is trying to build a movement against changing 295 acres near Hillsboro that would become a sand mine with a new proposal.

"Any person that I've talked about this is against it," said Evans.

Evans family has owned farms and property in the area since 1876. He said he's concerned about how a mine would change the landscape and affect the people who live nearby.

"I'm concerned about the blasting, I'm concerned about our wells," Evans said.

"I can't live with a sand mine where everything is gone," says resident JoAnn Enloe.

He's currently gathering support to his cause over social media.

The Jefferson County Planning and Zoning Commission will consider a zoning change of the land from residential/agricultural to industrial in June.
