FLORISSANT, Mo. (KMOV.com) -

An audit of the Hazelwood School District points to serious change needed after poor cash handling and missing money was discovered.

A state audit found a former principal at Hazelwood Central high school stole thousands of dollars.

The school board did not report her, the audit said. It also highlighted unnecessary spending over the last two school years.

Nearly $400,000 was doled out of things like membership fees, travel, and meals.

For instance, the district spent more than  $1 million dollars on legal services last school year.

School officials addressed those audit findings.

“We’re going to have a plan that looks at every one of those recommendations,” said Dr. Nettie Collins-Hart, Hazelwood School District Superintendent.

The district claims this time next year an executive summary on each issue the audit raised will be provided.

The audit was launched last year after a petition by people who became angry with the education cuts by the school board.
