CHICAGO, Ill. (KMOV.com/ATF) – An ATF agent was shot while working undercover in Chicago’s South Side early Friday morning.

The Chicago Tribune reports the agent was in the 4500 block of South Hermitage Avenue, which is located in the Back of the Yards neighborhood, when the shooting occurred around 3:15 a.m. The agent was working on a joint mission with the Chicago police task force officers at the time of the shooting.

The agent was taken to the hospital and listed in critical condition.

Neighborhood residents reported hearing a barrage of gunshots. One woman said they were too numerous to count.

No one is currently in custody in relation to the shooting, according to the newspaper. Information regarding a suspect has not been released.

Department spokesman Anthony Guglielmi said officers returned fire but it is unclear if the suspect was shot.
