(KMOV) - The Cardinals don’t get many days off during the year, but they did today. Mike Matheny spent his day off raising money for his charity Catch 22.

"Just trying to bring people together," said Matheny. "Big-hearted folks that want to donate their dollars and help out people in some tough situations."

Founded by Matheny and his wife in 2003, The Catch 22 foundation focuses on giving back to the community. They hold events like Thursday’s golf tournament to help build handicap accessible baseball fields in the area.

"The idea is just to raise some funds for kids we started early on building fields for handicap kids and having handicap accessible fields for kids and we have built a few over the city and now we are just trying to continue to figure out how to help that population."

Matheny was inspired to help handicap children and families after coming across a handicap accessible field years ago

"I saw one of these fields in Mississippi and one of my kids was playing and my wife and I was in-between games and we noticed it and just amazed at the thought of why wouldn’t St. Louis have something like this too."

Current and former Cardinal players have came today play a little golf, but more importantly support Matheny and his mission to help those in the community.

"He’s done a heck of a job," said Cardinal's pitcher Michael Wacha. With how far he has brought this thing and how much good he does."

For Matheny taking time to out of his schedule to help the children and families in the community is well-worth it.

"Their parents tell us it’s the highlight of their week when they go out and play on these fields and for us that’s priceless and once you get a glimpse of that."

Matheny and the Cardinals will get back to work Friday as the Cubs come to town for a three-game set.
