Chesterfield teen killed in cycling accident in Indiana

CHESTERFIELD, Mo. (KMOV.com) -

A local teenager passed away after he was involved in an accident while he was riding his bike near Purdue University.

Chesterfield native Lucas Shanker, 19, who was a student at the university, was riding his bike just west of the campus in West Lafayette, Indiana when he ran a stop sign Tuesday afternoon.

According to police, Shanker crossed the path of a pick-up truck who was unable to stop and struck the 19-year-old.

Shanker was critically injured with severe head trauma; he was wearing a helmet at the time of the crash. Shanker passed away Wednesday afternoon at a local hospital as a result of the injuries sustained in the crash.

Shanker was a recent graduate of Parkway Central High School.

The crash remains under investigation by local police. Drugs and alcohol are not believed to be a factor in the collision.
