ST. LOUIS (KMOV.com) – Retired Metro West Fire Chief Jim Silvernail was laid to rest Wednesday.

Silvernail served in the fire district for more than 30 years, retiring in 2003. On April 25, Metro West Fire officials said Silvernail had lost his battle with a tough illness.

“As many of you are aware, Chief Silvernail left this earth tonight to watch over all of us from heaven. On behalf of the thousands of firefighters he impacted, those he comforted in the middle of the night, those that he protected throughout his career and beyond, there are not enough words to express what he meant. However, we will spend the rest of our careers living out his passion and we will all do our best to honor the life of this worthy man,” said G. Michael Krause III, Fire Chief, Metro West Fire Protection District.

Visitation was on Tuesday at Schrader Funeral Home on Manchester Road. There was a firefighter walk through at 7 p.m.

The funeral was held on Wednesday at 10 a.m .at the Cathedral Basilica of St. Louis at 4431 Lindell Boulevard. Westbound lanes of Lindell between Taylor and Whittier were Wednesday morning.

After the funeral, the procession went to Holy Cross Cemetery in Ballwin. One lane of eastbound Manchester was closed near the cemetery.

Flags in St. Louis County were lowered to half-staff in honor of Silvernail.
