JEFFERSON COUNTY, Mo. (KMOV.com) -

A former alderman of a Jefferson County town plead guilty in federal court Monday morning to an indictment charging him with five counts of wire fraud.

Gary Keith Atchley, 53, was an alderman for the town of Olympian Village from March 2013 and December 2016. The indictment alleges that Atchley used the towns bank account to pay personal expenses, including making checks to cash and writing checks directly to himself.

The FBI investigation revealed nearly $58,000 worth of personal merchandise was bought by Atchley under the city’s name and $127,000 worth of checks were written to the former alderman; all unauthorized by the Olympian Village government.

If convicted, Atchley faces up to 20 years in prison, a fine of more than $250,000 or both on each count. The case was investigated by the St. Louis division of the FBI and the Jefferson County Sheriff’s Department.
