SOUTH ST. LOUIS (KMOV.com) -

This is small business week and a new survey is providing a better idea of how local business owners feel about the economy.

According to a survey by U.S. Bank, 70 percent of small business owners are optimistic about the future. For the first time in five years, economic uncertainty is no longer the top concern. Now, they worry about competition from big businesses.

They also found, specifically in Missouri and in the Metro East, for the first time in years, more small and medium size business owners are spending on hiring, construction and equipment.

That's exactly what South St. Louis hair salon owner Jeannine Vaughn is doing, as she remodels her Dutchtown shop. She says she sees more clients going back to small business owners.

"I think people like to feel like their money counts. I think people like to feel welcome. I think people don't want to leave their neighborhoods anymore so they're supporting more local businesses," said Vaughn, who has owned a hair salon for nearly 30 years.

Vaughn says her biggest concern right now is dealing with health insurance for employees.
